HISTORY OF BARANGAY DADIANGAS EAST

Dadiangas is a barangay situated in the heart of the City of General Santos and is the gateway to the entire province of South Cotabato and its neighboring provinces. When Gen. Paulino Santos (the city was named after him) first arrived here with the first batchers of Settlers of the National Land Settlement Administration (NLSA) before World War II, the place was cogonal and forested with thorny trees in which the native called these “DADIA-NGAS Tree”. The place became the barrio under the municipality of Glan, South Cotabato then it became a business district center when it became a town under the name Municipality of Rajah Buayan (separated from Glan) then eventually became a city. General Santos City where Dadiangas belongs remains the center of business until today.

In 1990, Barangay Dadiangas East was one of the quotient of the jurisdiction of Barangay Dadiangas which was conceptualized by the local officials and came into existence through many process of legalizing actions in order to enhance the delivery of basic services effectively and efficiently because the original barangay was already highly urbanized being the metropolitan district business center of General Santos City.

Barangay Dadiangas East was initially created through Resolution No. 90, series of 1990 of the members of General Santos City Sangguniang Panlungsod on May 24, 1990 in their 20th Regular Session. The same was then Mayor Rosalita T. Nuñez on the 13th day of June 1990.

The COMELEC, headed by Haydee B. Yorac scheduled February 24, 1991, the plebiscite day for the division of the said barangay. Notwithstanding the day-to-day activities of the people, the registered voters of Dadiangas proceeded to their respective polls that day and casted their ballots and finally the creation of the four barangays came out.

Thirty days after, Mr. Philip Nicart tendered his resignation and succeeded by Mr. Reynaldo V. Baybay on June 9, 1991 by virtue of the authority from the Mayor Rosalita T. Nuñez.

Through rapport and proper coordination of the Local Government officials and their orchestrated efforts with the Department of Education, Culture and Sports, a parcel of land situated within the compound of East Elementary School was donated to the barangay, together with the old Home Economics building of the school. Without much ado, the said building was being used as barangay office and rural health center.

Two weeks later, the barangay secretary was replaced by Mr. Simeon Cascaro but he did not stay long to the position because he tendered his resignation. Same with Teresita Mendoza, she filed her vacation leave but never reported to the office anymore. On February 28, 1992, the barangay treasurer was replaced by Verna Barayani.
